Interview with The Valets.

This week I interviewed Janelle Vecchio from the band The Valets. I'm a little bit biased here since one of our comic creators at braxcomics.com, Phil, is in the band, but he's been bugging me to do an interview with them, so here it is. To be fair, they're pretty good, and their song Carillonneur is one of the best indie songs I've heard in a while (you can hear it at their MySpace, links below). Thanks to Janelle, who was nice enough to take some time out of her busy schedule (she's a teacher AND a rock star) to do this interview. Enjoy the interview, and don't forget to visit The Valets at the links below.

Brax: Can you tell me about the origins of your band and how you got started in music?
The Valets: We are called The Valets and our band's motto is, "We rock so you don't have to." My best friend, who became my boyfriend, who is now my husband, said I could sing and he could teach me how to play keyboard. I didn't really believe him at the time, but we recorded some songs together, and suddenly I was in a band. The Valets mostly consists of my best friend/boyfriend/now husband who plays guitar and bass, me singing vocals and playing keyboard, and David who fills in the band with electronic drum tracks and technical help. The Valets sometimes includes other friends too, but we are the main three.
Brax: What music project are you currently working on?
The Valets: We're re-programming all of our backing tracks with the Korg DS-10.
Brax: When are you going to play some live shows?
The Valets: I don't know. Up until now we've mostly been a studio entity. We have to finish re-programming everything, and then get some practice in. Playing live makes me nervous, but I am ready and willing.
Brax: What are your favorite bands to see live?
The Valets: Starflyer 59, which I know are your favorite too, Joy Electric, and The Cranberries.
Brax: What one question would you like to ask me?
The Valets: Have you visited other planets besides Earth?
Brax: Aside from my home planet, Brax, the answer is no. Mostly because it's too expensive! Speaking of interstellar travel: light speed or warp speed?
The Valets: I think both would make me nauseous, but if I had to pick I guess it would be warp speed because I have always wanted to be like a Super Mario Brother.
Brax: iPod, CD, Vinyl, or other? Why?
The Valets: CD. Vinyl is too big, although my husband has quite a collection. I lost all my music when my computer crashed because I thought I could keep it all on my iPod, so I am against that. CD's are shiny and I like shiny things.
Brax: What is "drama rock?"
The Valets: It's a term my husband uses to describe our band. He is good at coining phrases, I am good at giving nicknames. We are a little dramatic, I guess.
Brax: What planet would you most like to visit, other than Earth?
The Valets: Neptune. I hear it's nice this time of year.
Brax: Any advice for others trying to “make it” in music?
The Valets: Don't sell out like The Jonas Brothers. Unless you want to make a ton of money, that is.
Brax: Anything else you’d like to add?
The Valets: Brax, I enjoy your comics. Great job!
