Interview with Map.

This week I interviewed Josh Dooley of the band Map. They've been releasing albums on Velvet Blue Music for a while now. Josh was also involved in my favorite band of all time, Starflyer 59, so Map gets extra cool points for that. Enjoy the interview, and be sure to visit Map at the links below.

Brax: What's the story behind the name of your band? Are you a cartographer or something?
Map: When I did not have a name yet someone asked what my music sounded like. I said melancholy, atmospheric pop.
Brax: What project are you currently working on?
Map: A new Map full length called "Speechless." It will be out this summer at www.velvetbluemusic.com.
Brax: What makes your band special?
Map: Major 7th chords with a little delay. Plus an obsessive mind over songs rather than having a social life.
Brax: What are your favorite bands to play live with, and why?
Map: Starflyer 59, Richard Swift, Dave Bazan, Cotton Jones, Page France. Because they are all amazing people that write amazing songs.
Brax: Star Wars or Star Trek? Why?
Map: neither. The recent Battlestar Galactica series has made both of those franchises obsolete.
Brax: If you had to rename your band today, what would you call it?
Map: Probably "Sequels and Remakes" or "Pistols and Pearls."
Brax: iPod, CD, Vinyl, or other? Why?
Map: ipod. I remember saying in the 80s I love music, I hate tapes and vinyl. ipods are the music when ever, where ever.
Brax: Tell me about your best and worst live shows ever.
Map: They are all amazing because of the people there, weather it's 1 or 500.
Brax: What is your opinion on robots?
Map: They are the next evolutionary step for man. Even now, after I die, my taste will live on in the cookies my computer has saved on Amazon's page.
Brax: Any advice for others trying to “make it” in music?
Map: Its cliche, but do it because you love music, not because you think you will even make a dime. Also, take the craft and business serious but don't take yourself serious. Welcome criticism. Even Paul McCartney and Radiohead don't trust themselves to produce, mix and master their material.
Brax: Anything else you’d like to add?
Map: Be an amazing example of how the world should be to your children.
