Interview with Francisco the Man!

This week I interviewed Scotty Cantino from the band Francisco the Man! I recently saw the band at Detroit Bar, and I was able to catch Scotty after the show to ask for an interview. In case you were wondering, the exclamation point is a part of the name, and a well deserved one at that. Francisco the Man! plays sweet indie pop rock, just the way I like it. The band's catchy melodies and memorable hooks will have you humming well after listening to them. Do yourself a favor and check them out. Enjoy the interview, and don't forget to visit Francisco the Man! at the links below.

Brax: Who is Francisco and what makes him the Man?
Francisco the Man!: I'm still trying to figure that out myself.
Brax: What music project are you currently working on?
Francisco the Man!: Currently, we are putting the finishing touches on our next release, a ten inch vinyl that will have five songs on it. It should be sent off for mixing and mastering sometime this month. We're pretty excited about it. School and other ruts have severely slowed us down since our first EP, and we're ready to get some new material out.
Brax: What makes your band special?
Francisco the Man!: That's a hard question to answer without sounding pretentious. Therefore, I will have to pass.
Brax: If you could travel at light speed, where would you go, and why?
Francisco the Man!: I would go to each and every place I have never been to. Why? Because I've never been there.
Brax: Describe your dream concert. Include where you’d play and what other bands you’d play with.
Francisco the Man!: I know I am going to get flack for this answer from the rest of the band, but I have to say that my dream concert would be to play Neil Young's Bridge School Benefit with whatever bands my closest friends and family are in at the time. Oh, and of course Neil Young.
Brax: Where do you see your band in five years?
Francisco the Man!: Still together. Kicking (butt) and taking names.
Brax: iPod, CD, Vinyl, or other? Why?
Francisco the Man!: At home, nothing beats a vinyl. All sonic qualities aside, I find that I am more likely to sit and really listen to a record when I put on a vinyl. How hip of me, I know. But really, It just seems to have more of a presence within a room. You can't really set it and forget it. However, on the go, nothing is more convenient than an iPod.
Brax: Tell me about your best and worst live shows ever.
Francisco the Man!: We opened up for Grand Duchy earlier this year. That was pretty fun. It's a lot different experience playing a sold out show with a guy like Frank Black hanging out in the back room.
Though, I'd have to say my two favorite shows have been with our friends in a band called Jeprocket. We played a show in Fullerton with them after we wrecked our van and almost died. I don't think we've ever played with so much gusto. We played another time with them in the basement of a local coffee shop. It was one of our old guitarist's last shows. For some reason it was just great. Lots of people packed like sardines in a basement equals good vibes.
As far as bad shows go, let's just say we've sworn off playing in random record stores or bars in gas station parking lots.
Brax: Androids or robots?
Francisco the Man!: Neil Postman.
Brax: Any advice for others trying to “make it” in music?
Francisco the Man!: If you don't feel it, don't play it.
Brax: Anything else you’d like to add?
Francisco the Man!: Thanks for being interested in our music and for coming out to our shows. Cheers!
