Interview with Dusty Rhodes and the River Band.

This week I interviewed the band Dusty Rhodes and the River Band. Seeing as how they are affiliated with Side One Dummy Records, you may just have heard of this excellent group. For the uninitiated, Dusty Rhodes and the River Band play a blend of classic rock, modern folk, and good old fashioned indie rock, which all combine to create a perfect musical blend. More importantly, these guys know how to write a some great music. Each song is utterly original, yet seems instantly familiar. In other words, they come highly recommended by me. Enjoy the interview, and don't forget to visit Dusty Rhodes and the River Band at the links below.

Brax: Can you tell me about the name of your band? Who is Dusty Rhodes?
Dusty Rhodes and the River Band: We initially liked the pun (dusty roads) and the imagery it evoked. It doesn't refer to anybody in particular, though most people think we're referring to the wrestler or (lead singer) Dustin.
Brax: What music project are you currently working on?
Dusty Rhodes and the River Band: We're working on a short film and an accompanying soundtrack. It's got some great new tunes and some new versions of our best old ones, as well as drama, adventure, and a twist at the end that will keep you guessing!
Brax: What makes your band special?
Dusty Rhodes and the River Band: We're pretty funny looking, but together we make a soulful sound that seems to touch people in a very special place that keeps 'em coming back.
Brax: If a spaceship is cruising at 1,000 miles an hour, how long would it take to travel one light year?
Dusty Rhodes and the River Band: Depends how often they stop at Love's to take a whiz or grab cheese puffs.
Brax: What other current bands do you listen to and/or respect?
Dusty Rhodes and the River Band: We're quite taken with the Fleet Foxes, Midlake, Blitzen Trapper, and Bat For Lashes, to name a few. They're all pretty poppy bands, but each conveys a sort of unique and thoughtful artistic vision, which adds so much depth and a whole other layer to the music.
Brax: Describe your musical style in ten words or less.
Dusty Rhodes and the River Band: Don't. Stop. Believing.
Brax: iPod, CD, Vinyl, or other? Why?
Dusty Rhodes and the River Band: Nothing like the smell of fresh vinyl in the morning.
Brax: Tell me about your best and worst live shows ever.
Dusty Rhodes and the River Band: They're all like our children. Some are loud and flashy, while others are nice but kind of slow, but in the end we love them all.
Brax: Lost in Space or Land of the Lost?
Dusty Rhodes and the River Band: Landing in the lost space land.
Brax: Any advice for others trying to “make it” in music?
Dusty Rhodes and the River Band: Make good friends with Chef Boyardee.
Brax: Anything else you’d like to add?
Dusty Rhodes and the River Band: Our new record/short film will be out this coming Spring. Mark your calendars!
