Week of Heatwave.

I've been on a little bit of a Son of Heatwave kick lately. Especially since his interview, I've become a major Jeff Mayfield fan. So, a couple of days ago, I went to see Son of Heatwave again. This time it was at the Detroit Bar, a super cool, ultra indie venue in Costa Mesa, California (NOT in Michigan. Please don't get lost). Here's a quick little review of the show:
The opening band was a very pleasant surprise. They are called Avenue of the Giants, and they are very cool. The band includes a stand up bass, cello, lap steel, and ukulele. Front man Alvia (sweet name!) was very nice and hooked me up with a free CD. The only disappointing thing was that no one in the band was actually a giant. Perhaps I could suggest a name change to Avenue of the Averaged Sized Individuals.
Next up was Son of Heatwave, this time with a mostly full band (minus the bass player for the evening). I've gone on enough about how cool they are, so I'll just say they played a great set and had the biggest crowd of the night. Please see them live if you ever get the chance.
Last up was the always entertaining Slings. They rotate through more random instruments and percussion in one set than I could possibly list here. During their last song, they handed out percussion instruments to anyone in the crowd who wanted them so we could all play along. Way to get the crowd involved!
All in all, this was an excellent show. The sound was good, the bands were excellent, the parking was free, and the show actually ended before midnight!
Brax.
